I can't help but find it hopeful that Annatar hasn't left yet, that he seems to have interpreted Celebrimbor's "Leave" as "Give me space and time to process this" rather than "Get out of my city forever." Maybe he still sees a slim chance that his future with Celebrimbor can be salvaged too. 😢 That takes some patience and willingness to leave himself open to further hurt and humiliation. I also think he's going to be appalled at the state Celebrimbor has worked himself into. He hates when Celebrimbor puts himself at risk. Aaggghhh I'm going to be gnawing at this until the next chapter.

It's either that or, as GreyHoodie pointed out in their comment above, Sauron is in fact playing Chicken with the entirety of Ost-in-Edhil, hahaha.
On a more serious note - if we are to believe that Annatar still puts some stock in Celebrimbor's opinions and wishes and takes them to heart at this point, your interpretation is very valid. He could have left, after all, and spared himself the humiliation instead of runinng the very real risk of having his attempt at honesty thrown back in his face.

We'll find out, well find out! Annatar hates it more than anything else! Sauron? Who knows. And who knows which persona is going to win out over the other, and whether it has the mind and will to spare appearances even a passing glance at this point.
