Barristan is roughly 25 years older than Ashara....which isn't that crazy in the world of Westeros (Jon Arryn was like 40 years older than poor Lysa). Elia didn't marry until she was around 20, so it seems unlikely Ashara was that much younger. Pretty sure Wiki has her around 23 when she dies.
It's pretty much the way of Westeros, that a woman who is known to have a bastard has her options limited. It's a misogynistic world. If anything, a guy who was nice and 25 years older is probably way, way better than most people in Ashara's situation would get in such a society.
