My suspicion is actually that they didn't want to reveal that the 80s route and the 2024 route take place in different universes too early — in 2024 we can tell that Linda and Bonnie weren't together . and np!!!! They were kind of playing off the feeling of safety with "Oh, Bonnie has Madi so she has to live until a few months or so before 2024 timeline" feeling when shocking us with her death
