See, I like to play with how it works and most children of Poseidon don't have a focus on purification specifically so don't deal with this kind of problem, and in more ancient times they would've been exposed to more magic in general so would be used to being exposed to magic. In contrast, Percy is a natural and powerful in purification, combine that with in the modern day a massive *lack* of magic, as a child his senses were working overtime to try and find anything around him so they grew far more powerful than a child constantly exposed to magic would. So most in the sea grow their power slowly, rather than all at once, because they too are exposed to magic constantly. It means he's in a position that they haven't really faced before, leading to him struggling extra as any magic around him immediately gets amplified times ten in his senses. What he needs is, yes a slightly weaker necklace that lets him slowly sense the items around him but they've never faced a situation where they need to slowly guide someone into sensory aspects like this so they don't know how to deal with that.
But don't worry ;) they will figure out how to deal with his senses in the future.
