Comment on From His Vantage Upon the Moon

  1. Yeah, no matter the continuity Galactus is never anything but a figure of absolutely TERRIFYING power. Which was conveyed incredibly well by both the backstory we were given and the view we got Richard Rider’s POV as the thing physically devoured the planet the way a human might a chip. The way he brings up so many different civilisations of various technological and mystical power failing to so much as make the devourer flinch adds to it, but not nearly as much as the casual mention of local pantheons simply… ceasing along with their planets. There is a pecking order amongst deities, and Galactus stands above all but the smallest number of cosmic entities.
Though the Surfer’s claim that he has no influence over his masters destination indicates that his heralds serves a somewhat different purpose in this continuity. In canon they specifically seek out worlds fit for their masters palate, so not sure what exactly the sentient force of nature needs them for here.

Richard Rider worked great as a POV character, being someone well versed in intergalactic history so we get a solid idea of the context and procedures for how these disasters are handled, while still adding a Terran human perspective on the matter. Find it an interesting concept that despite considering the Nova Empire to be his actual home now, he still clings so steadfastly to the principles of his planet of origin. Made the way he interacted with the Silver Surfer all the more engaging, with a highlight being his view on accepting the end. Noble, but not something you should just embrace when there are alternatives. Which the Surfer seems to somewhat agree with given his disappointment at the lack of resistance the Arbutians offered. Makes sense though, they are a peaceful race by nature, despite what we saw Ben do with the form.

Also liked the casual sprinkling of references to the extra continuities that have been added to the galactic community. Whether it be Rider having helped Autobots, the mention of the Asari homeworld (who sadly fit the negative aspects of the space elves comparison with reluctance to offer aid to refugees), or the fact that the Surfer collects crystallised Quintessence from destroyed planets similar to the Galra.

    1. I'm really happy you noted the idea of local divine pantheons being snuffed out despite their no doubt awesome power, I thought it was a great way of illustrating Galactus' cosmic might :D

Galactus can't (or perhaps won't?) communicate with mortals. His Heralds are the only means of conveying some semblance of his intent or state of mind - anything the races of the galaxy have learned about him (aside from those brief glimpses when he shows up and devours a planet) has been gleaned through the Heralds. It's unclear what compels Galactus to have his Herald announce to the peoples of a doomed planet that he's coming - maybe it's some tiny glimmer of pity, or perhaps some odd cosmic requirement we're not privy to. I'm sure some very jaded people think he's just gloating.

Thank you, as always, for your super in-depth review! <3
