People like that often internalise everyone else's treatment of them (and their anger at the perceived unfairness of the world), to, in Sheba's case, disastrous effect. She constantly makes reference to her own fish-out-of-water status. Younger Sheba must have decided that that cut both ways. Rin - that is, Rowan's Rin - is so insular that she must have felt she had no escape.
Shaaran, at least in my headcanon, has been inured against some of that dangerous idealism by using her powers to combat real injustice from a young age. Still trapped, but doing something about it, and valued by Thierry and Norris.
