Ooh, I love the idea of the slate. So interesting. And Sirius sweeping in on Christmas morning so they could do the 'family' presents was so so sweet. After reading through the whole scene, I get the other reason why he might want Bronach to open his present without an extended audience witnessing it, but I still love the sentiment. Also, I think Bronach's being a bit black-and-white about what being in political charge would mean. Sure, theoretically she could ditch all the laws against werewolves if she wore Arthur's crown, but that doesn't mean the discrimination goes away. It takes more than a crown to change people's hearts, and some people are very stubborn and creative about perpetuating hate even when it's not state-sanctioned. Still, I get her point.
And I loved the description of the people who went in to try to get the crown, especially the woman who would only say, "I changed my mind." For some reason, that felt especially compelling. I'm very excited to see what happens when Bronach encounters it!
PS- Do you use a drop spindle? My daughter gave it a shot (not a very long one; she's 11 and moves on to the next thing quickly), but I haven't really. It seems like it'd take a loooooong time to get enough yarn to actually do anything with, and I'd rather spend the time knitting. Maybe my daughter comes by her impatience naturally. :) Happy New Year!
The slate was an interesting brainstorm of mine and I'm glad with how it ended up turning out. I think even without it, he would have wanted to do a "family" gift exchange because he suspects how grating it would be for Bronach to have to keep her practiced distance from Aragorn and Arwen for a public exchange.
She is being a bit black and white, but she has seen what would happen without drastic change to the way things are done and if she were to take up the crown you can bet she'd have a very aggressive agenda (see: fix ALL the things). So it might not be possible to change hearts/minds by willpower alone, but you can bet she'd try.
Yeah, the crown is interesting because there's a combination of requirements to "activate" it, which means that people accept the calling that aren't necessarily suited to wear the crown. Actually trying to pick it up is the final interview, so to say, and nobody speaks about what it contains if they manage to survive the failure.
I have used a drop spindle before! Most of my spinning now is wheel-spun, but at the beginning I played around with a drop spindle to learn. One of these days I should go back, if I'm honest, just to see if it feels different now that I know what I'm doing. It definitely feels slower than my wheels. However, I've heard it said that you spin more/faster on your wheel, but if you're diligent at carrying your spindle/wool EVERYWHERE and spin in those random 5 minute increments you'll spin more. Sprint vs marathon, I suppose. Which makes sense to me just based on my experience with hauling knitting projects around vs leaving them at home and trying to work on them there.
