Lovely piece! The idea is brilliant and the execution is both wistful and beautiful. I may be tearing up slightly.
The initial descriptions of the setting and the ocean were powerful and bleak. How this was not Harrow’s memory, but that was not news was good.
How Harrow should feel cold, but doesn’t is an excellent detail, as is her feeling warmer as she approaches the playground. The playground itself was also very interesting. I liked Harrow’s thoughts about how it was more of a playground than anything she’d actually had, and that the climbing frame was made of bones fit that this is in part a construct of Harrow’s.
Hot Sauce appearing was excellent, as was her getting Harrow to accept the cupcake toy. Her not waiting for Harrow’s answer before starting to climb and Harrow remembering that you did what Hot Sauce said was great. Harrow actually liking biting into the toy was neat.
The quick shift from Harrow to Nona worked well. Her chest hurting from breathing and heartbeats was a fantastic detail.
I loved her saying she missed Hot Sauce. Varun being epic made me smile.
Nona and Hot Sauce wishing that they could be together for real and agreeing that this was good even so was really touching.
The kiss-taste being “It's not quite romantic, or it's everything romantic.” was perfect.
