I thought GUN was messing with their process by forcing these inefficient experiments and threatening Maria - well, keeping her in check to keep him compliant. Sure, they will need funding, but part of the space station mission was to get out of their reach and become independent, no? They're making enough progress to get money from different (less objectionable) sources, they just can't escape from GUN very easily.
Or did I misunderstand chapter 3?
"And suddenly, I can see it. Not just the theory, but the reality. Not a desperate escape, but an opportunity. A place where we wouldn't be monitored, where science wouldn't be dictated by military oversight or bureaucratic red tape. A station where Gerald would be free to work. Where I would be free to live."
that was the plan, but as you said, Threatening Maria to keep him in check, he pitched the ark to them to do more "unethical" experiments, far from the public eye. for the most part, it worked. they jsut had to start work with some gun scientists while they built the ark and then launch, when they were in space they could then wait for the station to be discovered by the public and release some "human progress focused" research, and then get funding that way. Gun would have soime presence on the ARK of course, but they would have allot more room for freedom as a research station rather then a military one.
But then the biolizard killed some people.
You have the right of it- but its now no longer "we can finally get rid of gun." for Gerald, now its "We need to keep them on board, or they will stop my research." because legally, Gerald is responsible for all the deaths. just look at all the logs with his name on it... oh those redacted scientists? dont look at that. Gerald Robotnik is a mad scientist, just look at what he did to his poor grand daughter.
When I write a Gerald interlude you'll see allot of things from his perspective that Maria is not seeing. For all her "intellect" I am giving her, she is very one track mind on herself and not looking much further past what Gerald shows her, and those damn GUN soldiers that are following her around.
Also keep in mind that everything is in Maria's PoV besides Walters' reports so far.
My initial comment was meant to show that I'd like to see those plans and how they're going in the next few chapters - I'm not critizing what you've written so far. Obviously the reality of the situation isn't what Maria & Gerald wanted. Might have ended up a tad boring that way, too.
Anyway, it really sounds like they would be so much better off without the GUN scientists. Should at least run a secondary lab without them or something. Maybe one directly under Maria, to 'humor' her? It would keep the 'real' scientists away, wouldn't it?
