You’re too kind haha!! I’m glad I achieved the slightly unsettling affect I was hoping for; like, Thrawn’s locked into unconsciousness, dreaming while his body is very much dying in the waking world, obviously something will be up (even if he’s reliving an extremely pleasant memory). The aspects that inspired the setting and scene didn’t actually make it into the chapter, though, which I blame partially on me being sick as a dog at the time and partially on it just not really fitting in as I wrote it.
The first aspect of that was inspired by the lovely summer rains of Florida and a time where I got caught in a huge rainstorm while in Rhode Island; my floridian pride would not permit me to spend money on an Uber for only a couple miles, so I ended up walking through the rain. Similarly, I think that Lysatrans—or at least Eli—would turn up his nose at cowering from the storm. I have a very clear mental image of Thrawn watching as Eli’s loose tank top becomes more and more sodden, clinging to his skin, and noting how Eli’s drenched hair is actually a darker shade of brown and much, much longer than uniform regs allows. It is worth noting also that Thrawn’s hair gets dishevelled in the rain and Eli brushes it out of his face but that’s neither here nor there LOL
The second part was at the bonfire; it’s not as fleshed out, more of a snapshot, but it’s just Eli, facing away from Thrawn to watch as the bonfire climbs higher despite the downpour, holding the sparkler straight up towards the sky. He turns his face to look at Thrawn, but before Thrawn can step up to stand by his side, the Novea twists between them to spiral up around Eli. That this point, thrawn can no longer distinguish whether its a costume or the actual mythological creature. The Novea, representing death and rebirth, Eli’s body tilted away from him but still looking back at Thrawn, and pointing the sparkler up at the sky all point to a divide between the two (physically with thrawn dying, or ideologically with Eli being more sympathetic towards the rebellion, or even just Thrawn knowing that he intends to send Eli away to the Ascendancy).
HOWEVER as I stated before they regrettably did not find their way into the final result. Thank you for bearing with my entirely self-indulgent ramble and THANK you for reading!!
I have read this comment so many times! Thanks for the added exposition on the dream sequence. I feel like I got to read an additional little fic right here in the comments. 💙
I am glad to have an excuse to ramble about one of my favorite memories lol. Maybe the ideas will make their way into the story later on, or another. Hopefully it will be like a fun Easter egg for you!!
