This was absolutely wonderful and I’m so grateful to you for writing this. Jason Todd starting a criminal empire to save the less fortunate has always been one of my favorite tropes, and I will die fighting for it. And you wrote this magnificently. The family interactions, the relationships, them making so many fucking friends. Constantine. Just, all of Constantine.
Also, the realization that the major difference wasn’t a minor shift in the bat family, it was Crystal‘s existence. Since Jason’s stepmom died earlier in the story, he bonded with Crystal. The end result of that was she was the one who brought him back from the pit rage early enough to do enough good to catch Steph’s eye, which resulted in that heart to heart that changed his plans. I love it! I love the inclusion of the actual people of crime alley he’s so determined to protect. Seriously, you did amazing.
As for something I’d like to see? I’d like to see the reunion between Harley and Bruce after she knows. The realization that that goth kid from college turned into Batman. It’ll be even funnier if she remembered him as Bruce Wayne, and just assumed he’d had some weird personality flip after college. And then she realizes that he didn’t, he just suppressed all his goth into Batman, lol.
