Law facing off against Vergo was great. And this exchange at the end:
“You don’t even know who he is.” Vergo’s voice was low, disgust explicit with each word. “You don’t deserve him.”
“The stars think I do,” said Law, not without irony, and plunged Kikoku down.
…damn that’s deliciously cold!
Also it speaks to Doflamingo’s ability to manipulate people/his scary charisma, that he can command such devoted followers (”I’ll raise him so he knows to die for me” comes to mind…also I really like your use of repetition in this fic).
It was really convincing how you wrote Doffy still having a hold on Law, after all these years and miles apart. All throughout I found myself wondering how much of their connection was because they’re soulmates vs. Doflamingo being the sort of person he is.
And I loved Luffy’s “You’re not his.”🥰 Luffy not caring about “some dumb star” suits his character perfectly. I loved Law and Luffy’s interactions, and how Luffy’s this big, forceful personality but what’s developing between him and Law is happening kind of quietly, while Law is avoiding acknowledging it.
Law’s heart skipped a beat. What was that? he asked himself, turning away from Straw Hat’s too-open face, unable to look anymore. This was a bad time to start having heart problems.
LAW.
And I was so happy when Law reunited with the Heart pirates!!! My favorite part was when he told his closest friends about Corazon and Doflamingo, and when Bepo said he was proud of him. 😭
Some other things I wanted to mention - how much I liked Robin talking with Law, Law observing Sanji had his soul words burned off (makes horrible sense), Nami having met her soulmate (Vivi?!).
I really loved this take on soulmates, and experiencing all this along with Law. ❤️
It's been such a treat receiving your comments these past couple days!! Hope you don't mind I'm combining my response for ch 3 and 4.
I'm glad you enjoyed the Heart pirates. I had so much fun writing them and honestly, this is reminding me how much I want to do a focused Heart pirate story. Adding that to my "to write" list. It was fun coming up with ideas for soulmates for all the side characters. I was keeping it up to interpretation for everyone but I was indeed thinking of Vivi for Nami. :D Ikkaku was actually super interesting because my initial idea was she and her "soulmate" had each others' words but they weren't actually soulmates and it was just a bad coincidence that they spoke the same fairly generic first words. So in my mind she finds her actual soulmate in the future. But I ended up leaving it very vague and it is entirely up to how the reader wants to read it.
I love stories where Luffy has a soulmate as well (and honestly, if I ever write another soulmate AU, he'd have one) but I think he's such a perfect candidate for being such a free agent that even a dumb star can't order him around. XD
Humans do get a win in this fic, for better or worse hahah!
Yeah, there's a lot of background psychology and manipulation going leading to the much colder encounter with Vergo, the hold Doffy has, etc. I think that's a great question too, how much of Law's feelings stem from the soulmate connection and how much from simply Doffy, which he'll never know for sure.
I'm so glad your favorite part was Law's talk with Bepo, Penguin, and Shachi because honestly it is one of my favorite scenes as well. It's like the penultimate emotional moment for him where he's acknowledging that Doffy is a part of him but he doesn't define him.
Again, thank you so much for your wonderful and detailed comments. I loved reading all your thoughts. ♥️
