The point of the ending is a hopeful ending rather than a happy one. Vace is by no means fixed, or well, but he's here and trying to be a part of his community. He's living in a society. He's having moments of genuine connection, he's doing a depression clean, and at times he gets to be as honourable as he wants to be. Vace doesn't realise that some of the other people in this chapter are trying to be his friend. godbless you dumb motherfucker.
I'm glad people enjoy the way I write friendships and family: the way people talk to each other isn't unreachable, because it's from my own experiences -- that there are always people ready and willing to treat you kindly. Vace is surrounded by prospective kindness and genuine connection he doesn't know how to reach for. But it's there. it's there.
