Because it wasn’t such a simple tradition, even Doran acknowledged he didn't want such a deal and the story always paints it as hostage. And because Doran didn’t tell Mellario about the deal when they met in purpose thinking she might reject him, it was a betrayal on his part. It was only natural that her resentment would grow to the point of separation but her husband was the princely sort and thus he had more power than her, keeping their children (his heirs) at his side.
