It’s a slight mixture of both the latter. Peter (at least here) is so used to everyone he loves either dying, leaving, or, a new addition, forgetting him. So, when someone, such as his neighbors, offer him help, he tries his best to refuse without being unkind because he thinks if they get too close, they’ll die. And if his luck is so bad that he can cause a death by simply liking/hanging out with someone, then he doesn’t deserve that kindness or love.
This was a REALLY good question by the way and I might go back to incorporate that into the story. Thank you!
