“Are you an angel?” Shou croaks, suddenly very sure that he must be dying, because this boy is so different from the rumors he’s heard from the people in his village that there’s no way he can be a harpy. He finds himself smiling despite the realization that his death is soon approaching, and murmurs, “You’re beautiful. If this is what dying is, I don’t think I’d mind going with you.”
As it would turn out, not all fairy tales are born from imagination.

Summary
“Shigeo, sweetheart, I need you to hide,” his mother tells him. Her voice has taken on the kind of strangled desperation that tells him she’s doing her best not to panic as she grabs him by the shoulder and crowds him toward a ground-level cabinet where she’s already squirreled his brother away. Outside, he can hear the muffled sound of an intense argument, his father’s calm voice cut off by the loud shouts of whatever angry people have come to bother them this time.
And Shigeo goes without a word, clambering into the cramped space on all fours, because this isn’t the first time he’s been made to hide. He’s nine years old and he has seen the cramped darkness of the cabinets more times than he can count on his fingers, fingers tipped with sharp talons that humans recoil from when they see them. He’s nine years old and he knows what human hatred feels like.

"Rays of sunlight peek through the trees and draw patterns on the ground and on Ritsu, who lays on his back with his eyes closed and his hands clasped over his stomach. With how quiet he’s being, he almost looks like he could be sleeping, his chest gently rising and falling with his even breathing. His bangs fall out of his face when he rests like this, revealing the smooth, stress-free expanse of his forehead. As much as Shou can appreciate Ritsu’s pout or the way his brow wrinkles when he’s annoyed, there’s a certain gratification he feels from seeing Ritsu like this, too, his worldly cares invisible."
He may be something out a fairy tale, but he isn't so different from everyone else.
