His breath is puffing like cigarette smoke out of his mouth as they hide behind an abandoned shed in someone’s yard. “This ain’t on me, babe.”

Beth’s come to expect a lot from this job; shit happens more often than not. She’s learned to be adaptable, to roll with whatever comes in front of her, to learn, because sometimes she’s forced to do so. Rio’s taught her a lot, even though she doesn’t admit it all the time. He’s good at what he does, a natural born leader, an instinct to suss out what a certain job needs and how much and when. So good with timing. He’s teaching her and she’s greedy to take absolutely anything she can.
She’s developed meetings on her own, kept good records, led payment conversations with clients and has fired her gun more than she’s wanted to.

Shit goes bad.
Beth feels like this should be par for the course at this point but somehow it always seems to surprise her when things go down the drain so quickly. This time it has to do with the police; it’s not a job gone sour, or a thug that can’t handle a simple deal honestly, or shaky hands or greedy underlying messages.
It’s the police and they’re onto them and it feels like anxiety is quite literally reaching into her chest and squeezing her ribs closed.

Beth presses the bar door open with her shoulder, relishing in the cool air kissing her flushed cheeks. Rio’s right behind her, his one hand on her lower back, snaking his arm around her waist as they walk towards his car. They’re both a little tipsy, should probably get an Uber home, but she half loves the entertainment of the idea of sleeping in the back seat.
“What happened back there?” She asks, looking over her shoulder at him as they move across the parking lot. “Thought we were having one drink.”

There are odd times in the universe where her and Rio end up at the park at the exact same time, but it isn’t for business. Her kids need to burn off steam and this is the closest place to her home that gets them out of a building, because she enjoys the outdoors (especially close to wintertime), when she can. Most of the time she’s alone, though sometimes Annie and Ruby are with her, or Dean, when Rio shows up with Marcus.
He doesn’t usually settle down next to her, especially when her ex-husband is around, but they watch one another—from one bench to another. His eyes always following her, smiling gently at her gestures, or making sure Marcus wanders over to say hi even when he doesn’t.

Beth doesn’t get sick often, but when she does, it hits her like a tidal wave. She’s been feeling off for a few days but she plays it off as being rundown; a headache here and there, fatigue, general crankiness wrapped into too many PTA meetings, bake sale discussions and becoming a human ping pong ball as she bounces from kid to kid, taking them to various obligations.
Not even to mention the run around she’s been working with Rio; dinner meetings, updating the books, moving cars, and drops. Annie and Ruby tell her to slow down, but she doesn’t, because of course she can handle it.

All I want is for you to be happy –it’s not something Rio ever says to her but sometimes Beth wonders if he would, if those are words he’s capable of saying. They don’t communicate like that, through syllables, through dialogue that makes sense once it’s in the atmosphere.

They don’t talk for a few days, which is probably a good thing.After the bar bathroom and watching him smash that car in front of Dean, it takes a while for her to get her head on straight. She wanted to be out, to be done, and yet…him standing there, brute force, demanding a partnership out of her is enticing in a dark way that she rarely lets herself think about.
