After dragging him through hell and back time after time, somehow they had emerged together- battered, grieving, and exhausted- but together again, at the end of it all. Somehow they always do. Deduction is the natural conclusion of an understanding of existing patterns. Patterns form, and he would be a poor detective indeed not to notice them. Mary noticed, certainly.
