NOTES: I had a rough time having the Captain of the Guard as a major character and always having to refer to him by his rank, especially since, over the course of this series, it changes. Thus, I hath named him 'Cap' because I am terribly uncreative with names and can't imagine him being called anything else (plus, as it turns out, ‘Cap’ actually can be used as a name).
On the topic of military rank, in this series Cass's father was not the captain of the guard when he found her. Instead, he held the position of First Lieutenant, which I envisioned as being a rank just below that of captain; he is sometimes referred to as such.
For a third note, this series makes frequent use of an OC (thought I'd do a quick bio here rather than constantly re-introduce him at the start of each fic he's in). Captain Williams is the man who headed the guard before Cap. He serves as a mentor to Cap in matters related to both military and parenting (having raised several kids himself years before) and a grandfather-type figure to Cass with quite the wry sense of humor (Cass had to get it from somewhere).
