Summary
At the Thanksgiving dinner - opulent, excessive and familial without being properly warm - Alex catches Henry staring at him over the green beans.
Although Henry narrows one eye at being caught, he doesn’t look away. This is new. Alex searches his face for some clue as to why Henry has chosen to fixate on him. The conversation swells around them, and for just a moment no one is paying them any attention.
He sees the fiery flash again - is it loathing, or fear? Revulsion? Disdain?
Wait.
Oh.
Oh, no...
Henry holds his gaze steadily, and nudges him silently towards his realisation.
Oh, fuck.

Summary
It’s Christmas Eve dinner at the Laurens homestead, a surprisingly informal occasion to which Henry has invited a wide circle of relatives and acquaintances. The room around Alex is bustling with happy faces and seasonal cheer. He hates every moment of it.
He’s in freefall.
They’ve been there for three whole days and Henry has not so much as spared him a private glance. If Henry doesn’t get his hands on him tonight, he’s going to go mad with unspent tension.
Or do something really, really stupid.

Summary
“You have been misbehaving,” Henry says, by way of greeting.
Alex flushes and sits up straighter, staring at the bedspread. “Sorry, sir.” He bites his lip and adds, “Only, I was waiting and--”
“Hmm.” Henry takes a look around the room and strolls over to one of the shelves that’s piled high with John’s childhood paraphernalia. He pulls out a book. “Shall I read you a story, Alexander?”

Summary
Something soft touches Alex's face. Fabric, a familiar musky smell. Henry presses the fabric over his eyes, draws it around over his ears, and binds it securely at the back of his head.
Then he leans in, places one finger underneath Alex’s chin, and nudges his mouth closed.
“While I enjoy your sounds of distress, Alexander,” Henry murmurs, his voice just a touch muffled by the cloth over Alex’s ears, “Tonight, I require you to remain absolutely silent. Understood?”

Summary
There’s a knock on the door. It's John.
Alex is dragged violently out of his pleasant, aroused daze. His heart starts pounding furiously, and his sudden jerk of surprise knocks his head lightly against the underside of Henry’s desk.
“Hush,” Henry says fondly, then raises his voice. “I’m busy, Jack.”
But John doesn’t leave. “Please?" he calls through the closed door. "It will only be a minute, and I wanted to speak to you while Alex is out. It’s, ah, pretty urgent.”
And then Alex’s heart leaps into his throat, because Henry says, “Oh, all right, come in,” with just the barest note of wickedness.

Summary
He watches Henry take a sip from the glass, and suddenly he wants to be allowed to drink from this cup too, to gulp down anything that Henry might give him. Henry swallows, seems to think for a moment, and then nods approvingly. He fixes Alex with a long, contemplative stare.
“Open your mouth.”

Summary
The silence of the house is nothing at all like the electric quiet of the athenaeum, now, finally, that his Alexander is kneeling on the carpet before him - naked, blindfolded and tense, his lips parted and his hands gripping to the soft flesh of his inner thighs. Sometimes Henry enjoys designing elaborate games, but tonight - after so many months - the simplicity of this is even better.
He hasn’t even ordered this - it’s all Alexander’s doing - and it’s perfect.

Summary
“Gosh, I’m sorry, but I’m about to head to the airport.” John says.
“Ah, really? That's a shame,” Henry says. “I was hoping to spend some time with my boy.”
Henry meets Alex’s eye for just a second.
Oh. Henry’s here for *him*.
Alex considered this possibility the minute Henry stepped into their apartment. He dismissed it as arrogant to think that Henry would go to such lengths just to play a sick joke on him - but all it takes is that blazing look to confirm it. He marvels that Henry has wasted his time concocting this ludicrous ruse - and then coming up all the way from DC to carry it out. For him. Alex can’t figure out how he feels about this.
Other than angry, that is.

Summary
He’s worked so hard to cover up every pressed-in bruise, every smear of come and saliva and sweat, every crumpled bedsheet, every glance at Henry’s divine hands, every quiet exhale that threatens when Henry enters a room or gives him a knowing smile across the dinner table.
Paid a toll in literal and figurative blood.
Paid it gladly.
And now it’s all for nothing?
