Summary
Illumi is excited, his heart beating fifteen beats per minute faster than usual, his stomach tense with a sensation that reminds him a little of arsenic poisoning. But none of that shows in his face, his posture. “I don’t believe you’re psychic,” he says bluntly.
Hisoka’s smile is wide, generous. “I know. But just think of all the fun we could have while I convince you.”
OR: The first time Illumi meets Hisoka is supposed to be the last.

Summary
It’s three o’clock on a dusty Friday afternoon, and Illumi has just been propositioned in broad daylight by a man clearly lacking in sanity.
“Very well,” he says.

Summary
“Pleasure is pleasure,” dismisses Illumi. “Rats will starve themselves for it, and I presume you would too. Love is something else entirely. You’re drawn to me because your disaster of a childhood has left you craving danger.”
Hisoka’s smile is wry. “And you’re drawn to me because you’ve never met anyone who was interested in you as a person and not a weapon. Face it, Illumi; we’re both crackers. Much more fun to be mad together.”

Summary
“My heart is an organ; nothing more. It does its job. I don’t consult it in my decisions.”
Hisoka laughs, the sound full-bodied as the wine before them. “It was your head, then, that brought you here in your ten thousand dollar suit and your platinum cufflinks? Your head that decided to impress me with your wealth? I would have thought better of it.” He keeps his eyes on Illumi as he tips his wineglass back, drinking without breaking eye contact. “Hearts, though. Hearts make those kinds of foolish decisions.”

Summary
Even without reciprocating, even content to take all and give nothing in return, Illumi can feel himself becoming slowly intertwined with Hisoka, their lives stitched together with that same steel thread. Can feel the way he comes to expect the fortune teller’s presence, comes to want it. Like a seed buried for years in frozen earth, he’s finally felt the warmth of the sun, and he is growing up towards it.
Until one day, it’s simply not there.
