Summary
Rain lashed against the windows, and sharp flashes of lighting punctuated by dramatic rolls of thunder rattled the frames, as if something were trying to break into the apartment. Lan Sizhui adjusted his headphones slightly and shot a glance towards the dark night outside. Years later, he would look back on that night with the wry knowledge that the weather was appropriate for the events that would unfold, but in that moment the thunderstorm outside was merely the background noise to his homework.
Lan Sizhui has an essay to write for his history class, but the topic keeps bringing up his family's tragic history.

Summary
“Fuck, I hope we don’t die like this!” Jingyi screeched. Sizhui watched the puppets trying to fit themselves through the small gaps in his net and wondered with quiet terror if they could pull open a large enough hole to break through. The squares strained and grew as the puppets shoved their arms towards the cowering teenagers, and their snarls grew in volume until Sizhui felt that the only thing he could hear was the noise of these creatures that were trying to get at him and kill him. He wondered if this really was going to be how they died, and wished vaguely that it could have at least been a more dramatic and heroic end…
The junior quartet goes on a night hunt, and Sizhui learns more about his family's past and complicated present than he thought he ever would.
