𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒅. Your ears are tuned to her voice. You could pick her out in a sea of thousands. Her voice makes pretty singers who sing pretty songs sound dull. Her voice makes everything else sound ugly.

𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒉. The color of her eyes are enough to drown in. She is turning you into a clichéd love-wrecked being. You’re drowning, always sinking. down, down, down.

𝒇𝒊𝒇𝒕𝒉. You know her. You love her. Through a thousand lifetimes, across millions of stars, you’d find her, you’d never leave her. You love her, till death do you part.

⠀In this AU world, 𝒓𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 is a known fact and phenomenon, though it does not happen often—when it does, it’s hardly acknowledged, never remembered, rarely taken seriously beyond face-value. There have been tales and claims of past lives and reincarnation for as long as humans have been recording, even before the invention of photographs.

⠀Likewise, 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔 are not something that is taken with unbridled loyalty. It is treated more like a fantasy and wills of the heart. There is an ‘old wives’ tale’ belief that soulmates share synchronized heartbeats; there have been tales about one half of the bond feeling when the other has died. But these claims are not taken with faith by many. If synchronization is true, any pattern distortion is caused entirely by coincidentally fitting events in either person’s current lives. For some, soulmates are denied because it would prove that people’s lives are governed by fate and not free will. For many more, it’s supported by their own parents and life partners were united not to the belief, instead choosing to have a happy life despite no synchronizing.

⠀The seeming randomness of both phenomena doesn’t help much. Also, how can soulmates exist when those matched don’t even remember their past lives to know they have met before and that this is destiny and not just chance? Not many have lived long enough to know. Some don’t want to.
