Alina is tiny, and sickly, and so when the Duke takes her and several other orphans to the dollmaker, she makes do with the scraps no one else wants. The resulting doll isn't conventional, but she loves it fiercely all the same. She loves it's black wool hair and it's black button eyes. She loves how safe she feels in the dark when she whispers her secrets to it, how grown-up she feels when it whispers secrets back.
