“I see the way you look at yourself, Amalda.” Her voice is softer now. “You don’t deserve it.” Her hands splay across the patchwork quilt they share, finally uncurling, and when she looks up at Amalda it sends a hot rush down her throat, wine to the desiccated. “You don’t deserve to carry this.”
Amalda laughs, humorless. “No one does.” Karin, Misha, her old friends— none of them came out of it unbroken.
“No,” Misha agrees quietly, her rueful smile heavy with the same grief in her voice. “But we will, regardless. Together.”

“Karin,” Amalda starts that night, after the children have been shepherded into bed, “I think we should talk.”
Karin gives her a dubious glance from across the table, but sets down her book. “About what?”
“You see…” Gods, but it’s difficult to start a conversation like this. She soldiers on, one foot in front of the next, placing her hands on the table. “Well, you’re going out into the world soon, and there are particular… things… that one should know about the world. And the people in it. And— and how those people… interact.”
Karin’s look goes from dubious to dawning horror. She doesn’t say a word.
Amalda takes a steadying breath. “When… When two adult people love each other very much—”
