And so Nicky began a routine of boxing up fresh bread or lemon scones or various assorted cookies and squares and treats once or twice a week for Nile to pass along, and she in return showed him pictures of the cutest, curliest, most sparkly eyed baby in the world and eventually also a video featuring his equally curly haired and sparkly eyed father. And then he blushed pinker than the strawberry buttercream he'd been prepping when Nile clocked him for thinking Joe was hot.
Never would Nicky have guessed they would become his own little family. But less than a week later Joe walked into Nicky's bakery with Khalil strapped to his chest to thank him in person and to complement both his baking skills and his kindness, insistent on thanking him in some proper way that it was eventually settled would be in the form of coffee once Nicky made it clear that yes, he in fact did want to hang out with ("seriously, Joe, the cutest baby in the world"). Nicky learned after poking at Khalil's little belly with tickling fingers that he had dimples to match his baba's too, dimples that Joe had out in full force watching Nicky take so quickly to his son, and he supposes he hasn't looked back since then.

"-love you with all my heart." Nicky's whispering, quiet and low like it's not meant for anybody else in the world to hear. "You're just perfect. And everybody tells you that all the time, I know. So many people love you, sweetpea. Your baba loves you more than anyone has loved anyone else ever in the whole world. And I love you so much that I don't know how else to say it. And your uncle Booker loves you, and your aunt Nile, and Pierre and Jean-Paul and Remy. You were looking awfully grumpy earlier, which was very cute, even though I know you didn't mean for it to be. And I know it was because all that love can be overwhelming. But we can't help it, sweetpea. You deserve all the love in the world."
Or: It's Halloween. Joe and Nicky are falling in love, Nicky might be falling asleep, and Joe realises that Khalil already has Nicky wrapped around his little fingers.

Summary
Joe nestles his cheek into the pillow, yawning big and sudden. Khalil and Nicky both catch the yawn at the same time, and sure, Khalil doesn't have any of Nicky's DNA, but the way he scrunches up his little nose and opens his mouth like he's growling as he yawns is entirely Nicky, down to the squeaky, barely there little sigh at the very end.
Or: Khalil is afraid of thunderstorms, Nicky knows what to do, and Joe loves his family very much.

Summary
"Somebody needs a nap." Joe suggests, watching them from the sofa with his chin tucked into his palm, eyes warm.
"No!" Khalil whips his head around, eyes wide, sweet smile melted off of his face. "Not tired!"
It's become a bit of a war, nap time. And Nicky knows he should try and help deescalate things more often, but he's usually too busy laughing. Joe and Khalil have the exact same exasperated face. They give each other identical side eyes, and curl their lips the same way in disgust while Joe tries to get Khalil to go lay down in his bed instead of falling asleep on the floor with his toys, or on the sofa, or once, notably, at the kitchen table, face resting comfortably on top of his half eaten peanut butter sandwich.

Summary
"Baba!" Khalil shrieks with joy, kicking out his legs and wiggling in delight. Nicky shakes him gently with a palm grasping him by his tummy, just to make him keep smiling and laughing, to hear him joyfully exclaim "ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!" and finally lifts him up into his arms again. Khalil snuggles right back up against his chest, relaxing like he's ready to go right back to sleep, lifting his head once or twice to grin up at Nicky and giggle before face planting back down to his shoulder.
"Okay, sweetpea." Nicky tickles his little belly just a little to make him giggle some more, squirming happily in his arms. "Let's go see baba."
Or: In which Khalil decides that Nicky is also baba, Joe is amused, Nicky is confused, and sleepy cuddles are had by all.

“Ah-“ Joe tips his chin. “A choice befitting only the most distinguished gentleman. It never would have occurred to my underdeveloped palette to use all three kinds of chocolate chips. Merci, monsieur.”
Khalil smiles at him. He's all dimples, batting his eyelashes like he knows just how cute he is. He most likely has not comprehended a word of what Joe’s said. But he understands nonetheless that he’s being praised for little more than being adorable and tiny, and he knows exactly how to play into it.
Joe smooches his little devil's forehead and sets about gently extracting the bags from his arms to measure them out for the cookie dough before he can get his banana-sticky fingers all over them.
Or: Fall is the season for snuggles, seasonal ailments, and plying your family with food made with love.
