  1. Summary

Lady Arline De Sardet was everything they expected her to be: pleasant, dutiful, even docile; intelligent, astute, and diplomatic. She was also everything they expected her not to be. They called her Arlo, behind her back. First, because of the dark mark on her face, the lame joke being it looked like a five-o-clock shadow. Then, because she trained with the sword and wore trousers. Later, to court's unending delight, because she chose to wear men's boots even underneath her gowns. Next, it was the fact that she often replaced the gowns with suits and doublets altogether. The glee reached its zenith when she was rumoured to court a woman. It's all in good spirit, they said, her quirks were graciously accepted, and she was still a beloved character. Her mother and uncle were not that amused, however, and they would not stand for her most persistent attempts at remaining a spinster.
