Summary
It's Saturday, and this month Clint's based out of DC, running prep, update and maintenance courses rather than anything else. It means that when word comes through that Natasha's current op is successfully closed and she's signed off, he plays a brief game of guess-the-bolthole.

Summary
"Do I need to sit up for this?" he asks, and she's struck for a second just the way that the question is his, sounds just like himself, and should sound stupid or thoughtless or something, and doesn't - because he knows exactly what she is, because he knows exactly what she is right now as she sits here, and he's still asking that question, that way, because it's what he'd ask anyone. Because he's tired and drowsy and he'd rather stay where he is, but that means he'll stay drowsy.

Summary
Betty didn't know what to expect, coming here; now she doesn't know exactly what it is she's looking at, besides that it's shaped more or less like a chair for some kind of medical or dental procedure. It's mostly black, very solid-looking, it has the assorted scratches, dints and imperfections of a piece of equipment that's both well-used and kept in as close to perfect working condition as possible, and that beyond the general shape it has a lot of . . . extra stuff attached. All over the place. But especially where arms and legs would go.
Betty doesn't see it, or maybe her brain refuses to see it, until Bruce says, "Those are restraints." He says it quietly, saying it to her instead of to the room in general. "Heavy-duty restraints."

Summary
"I think I need to go back Stateside," Natasha says, in English, dropping her hand to her knee. Clint watches her fingers dig in, just a little, denting the faux-satin pjs she's wearing. "He doesn't . . .know what he's doing. He doesn't understand. I - it's not surprising," she says, with a sigh. "But Barnes came to him - "
"So if he doesn't figure it the fuck out," Clint finishes for her, "he's going to get himself killed." And she nods.

Summary
The air outside the building feels sharper, lighter than before she went in, but she knows that's elation, adrenaline, endorphins and relief. A lot of relief. She's been relieved to be wrong before; she's even been more relieved to be wrong than she is now. But not often. It makes the feeling familiar, lets her account for it, but she lets it carry her along anyway, lets it make her steps quicker and lighter, almost skipping: it only makes her less noticeable, makes her look like a woman happy to go out, and the happiness gets explained by her heading to the car that pulls up to the curb alongside her, so she can get in.

Summary
It's always a dance.
Sometimes it's a game, too: some dances are playful, and sometimes play means the equivalent of giggling in corners and sometimes it's the equivalent of just barely pulling your punches because you're only trying to make the other person call uncle, not actually hurt them. But sometimes it's not a game, sometimes it doesn't need to be and sometimes it damn well shouldn't be.
It's always a dance.

Summary
"You know one of the first pieces of advice Rhodey ever gave me, after the stupid fucking Expo?" she asks, quietly, picking an imaginary piece of lint off the shoulder of his shirt with her free hand. She goes on before Tony can come up with something smart and says, "He said you were guaranteed to say stuff like that. That you would definitely have times where you said you had no idea why I had anything to do with you, or even ask me why. And that I should never, ever actually tell you."
