“They will be here any minute,” Elain said in a breathless voice, her golden brown eyes peering up at him as she raised her head. Her hair mused from their afternoon lovemaking. “And I have to get ready for tonight.”
Azriel felt his heart drop at the reminder
Tonight. Her engagement ball. To Lucien.
Her fingers played with the dusting of hair on his chest, the diamond ring she wore caught the afternoon sunlight — glimmering brightly. Azriel felt the sudden longing for midnight and darkness and shadows.

Summary
“You leave in two days,” Rhysand called. “You’re to spend four nights in the human realm, and then a week in Autumn. It will be just you and Elain, Azriel. And while I may have overstepped my bounds before, Elain is my sister. I won’t have you playing with her heart. We’ve all sacrificed too much for you to throw it all away — If you’re going to cause political unrest and start another war, at least make sure you love her.”

Summary
The first time they met in the garden was an accident.
Elain was tending to her roses, the kind that perfumed all of the townhouse, when a shadow crept over her. It was blocking the sun that was beating down on her — Despite her floppy hat the sun was still blistering hot and managed to stream through the cracks in the straw.
The shadow that shaded her felt like a cold drink.
Elain instantly relaxed, basking in the shade it provided her. She leaned back onto her calves, wiping her dirty hands on her apron and looked around.
Everything was exactly as she expected it to be, but the shadow above her was instantly recognizable as Azriel’s. It wasn’t the first time he had done this for her, in fact he did it almost every time he was at the townhouse — never mentioning it, just acting as if it never occurred. But he hadn’t done it for her since that night.
The solstice.
