Summary
[Leone] has never crossed the threshold, but every weekend he has watched. Every weekend he is nearly coaxed across the street by the sonorous base, the hypnotic color changing lights. The sound of people laughing and partying calls out to his lonely, miserable soul but has yet to pull him from his self-loathing and into action. Until tonight. Tonight he manages to get all dressed up before the fear hits him in full force. If he goes in there and disappears, by normal or supernatural means, then he is certainly facing a fate worse than death. His life is already exhausting enough, he doesn’t need to suffer more. Some traitorous part of himself whispers that even if the worst does happen, could it really be worse than drinking alone in his shitty apartment letting his guilt tear him to pieces every time he’s sober? The answer to that question should be a resounding yes, but Leone’s feet carry him out his front door regardless.

Summary
He takes one shaky step into the forest and is immediately overwhelmed with an intense sense of vertigo, as if with his next step the ground would give way and he would plummet indefinitely. Tentatively, he taps the ground just beyond the roots. When his foot lands on solid dirt, he slowly unravels his arms from the tree and takes another cautious step. This step lands on what feels like a branch, which snaps with a sound that echoes through the entire forest. Leone freezes. His heart hammers wildly in his chest. Something heard that. He doesn’t move again until his heart settles and he is absolutely certain that nothing is lurking in the mist.
Leone, the forest whispers, you shouldn’t have turned back.
Leone shakes so hard he fears he may fall apart, he dashes the last couple steps to cling to the tree in front of him. “I’m sorry,” he says aloud. “I’m sorry, I know I’m intruding.” The forest doesn’t want him there. The forest doesn’t respond.
