Maybe Nancy just desired her own destruction as a way to atone her guilt, but she was too morally repugnant to the idea of having an actual death-wish. Her love for Robin wisped away like smoke between her fingers - and god, in the sanctuary of her own kitchen she could finally admit that it was love - and it had shoved her heart in a blender; it felt fitting enough to be a punishment, but it was still only a tenth of what she deserved.

She wanted to have Robin with her when she said it - when she finally said those three words that she’d been carrying like a ball and chain - so she could see how Robin would react. Perhaps her eyes would widen, and her mouth would twitch that way it did sometimes before Robin would kiss her, and she’d murmur it back against her lips. That was ideal scenario number one.

With her heart in her throat and her stomach tying itself into a double-knot, Robin managed to sputter out, “She’s sitting across from me.”

Robin Buckley’s supposed to be a silent wall. An unwavering barrier defending her client from the poisonous fangs and claws of the outside world. A dependable shield who, when doing her job well, is practically invisible despite being in plain sight.
Usually, she has no issue with any of this. Excels at it all, really. But unfortunately, her current protectee seems fiercely determined to put herself in harm's way, and Robin isn’t sure she’s going to be able to make it through this high-profile gig without racking up a few criminal charges.
Nancy Wheeler’s supposed to be the perfect daughter. A mild-mannered socialite smiling and waving on cue. A temporary journalist using her college education to write puff pieces until she settles down.
Much to her parents’ chagrin, Nancy has never been anything like the demure doll they expected her to be, and she has no plans of ever doing so. Not when there’s so much vile corruption and wickedness oozing out of practically every office and facility in the country. Not when she seems to be the only one willing to do anything about it.
