Summary
Sleep just won’t come to him.
He’s been staring up at the ceiling from the moment they rolled into bed shortly after eleven last night. It’s not that he isn’t tired because he is, almost ridiculously so, but he wonders if that’s the issue. Maybe he’s overtired. It’s been an… eventful week, to say the least, but it’s not the explosion, building collapse, his dad’s injuries, or subsequent not-cancer that’s on his mind.
It’s Carlos.

Summary
He doesn’t go back to sleep.
He should. It’s 3:18 in the morning, probably closer to 3:20 now, and he is exhausted. The tiredness is bone-deep, evident from a long and dramatic week neither of them has managed to fully move past yet, but he has got an armful of his fiancé and tears streaming down his face. The moment is one he never wants to leave, tired or not.
Everything feels surreal. From the pure happiness running through his veins, making his heart beat ten to the dozen, to the way his brain won’t stop repeating the word fiancé. Being tired from being woken up in the middle of the night or living through yet another awful week doesn’t matter because he is happy. He is engaged, and he is happy.

or, they're engaged.

Summary
“You called me Tyler.”
TK’s voice sounds wrecked to his own ears. It’s dry and rough, a little breathless from their activities, and he’s in dire need of a glass of water. He’d move and get them both one, as well as a cloth to clean up, but he’s exhausted down to his bones. Unsurprisingly, really, considering he’s been awake all night only to be restless enough that he realized waiting until morning to propose to the love of his life wasn’t an option. So cue a 3:18 a.m. proposal, and of course, neither of them has been back to sleep since.
So he’s wrecked in the best possible way.
And it just hits him, out of nowhere and nearly an hour later. He has to blurt the words out, even with Carlos half asleep next to him, his limbs starfished over TK’s, whilst he’s probably wanting to grab a few more hours before the world around them wakes up.

Summary
“If we run into anyone we know,” Carlos says as he manoeuvers the shopping cart up to the bell peppers, “you’re going to give us away.”
TK picks up a red one, then an orange one and a yellow one—green bell peppers should be illegal, babe. You’ll have to start arresting them—and, at Carlos’ nod, places them in the cart. He practically skips back to Carlos’ side despite it only being three paces away, kisses his cheek, and threads his arm around the one Carlos is using to hold onto the cart.
“How am I giving us away?” he asks in that tiny, slightly whiny voice, a frown etching into his features.

Summary
A few car horns later—Carlos will have to ask TK, again, why they really had to get a taxi to the hotel because New York tourist staple or not, this traffic is a nightmare—TK turns to him after staring out of the window and sighs. He doesn’t speak, but Carlos can tell something is going to come up within the next minute or so, so he waits patiently, a hand in TK’s and a gentle smile on his face.
TK sighs again. “You know, it’s impossible not to be back here and think about what happened the last time I was here.”

Summary
“Reyes-Strand,” TK whines, pouting. He folds his arms against his chest for extra effect because he really is just an over-dramatic child who sulks when he doesn’t get his own way.
Not that this is about getting his own way. He can’t help it if he’s right.
“TK.” Carlos sighs, exasperated. He flicks over to the next page of his too-big wedding planning folder and tries to ignore his fiancé’s antics because they’ve had this conversation. Okay, yes, maybe it’s a conversation they need to have again because they are getting married soon, and something like a shared last names needs to be decided more promptly than the colors of flower arrangements.
But it’s not Carlos’ fault that they can agree on everything but this.

Summary
“TK, no! Don’t touch that!”
TK looks over at Carlos, hand frozen mid-air above the multitude of paper scattered across the dining room table. In the center sits a binder set flat against the wood and opened to a page about flowers. It’s covered in various Post-Its notes: yellow detailing numbers of local florists, pink with the type of flower and its meaning, and orange covering their own preferences as discussed.
Carlos is aware that it looks a little chaotic, but to him, it’s organized chaos.

Summary
“We’re getting married tomorrow,” TK says as he takes Carlos’ hand in his, much like he did years ago when they, again, were lying on top of the Camaro discussing the future of their relationship.
Tonight is different. For starters, there is no swirl of green lighting up the sky, though the Texan stars are just as beautiful. They’re in the same spot, a private one Carlos knows an hour out of the city, and they’re in the same car, Carlos’ blue pride and joy, but they’re two different people in a whole different world.
Because a lot changes in a couple of years.
—
The night before their wedding, TK and Carlos go back to where it all started.
