Summary
Sometimes Joe imagines that the sea made Nicolò just for him, in gratitude for all his years of attention and care. One night he dreams of Nicky swimming out beyond his sight, returning to the water he came from, and he wakes distraught. Soft breathing from the other side of the room soothes him back to sleep, and by morning the dream is forgotten.

Summary
Nicky looks up from where he’s lounging in the grass. His face brightens when he sees Joe, but there’s something guarded about him as well. He springs to his feet, brushing wet grass and sand off his legs. His hair is even longer than it was when he left, and it shines slightly in the weak sun.
In the shock of the moment, the only things Joe can think to say are inane. You’re back. You must be cold. He remains frozen, unsure of how to respond, and Nicky’s small, hesitant smile slides off his face like a glacier calving.
A sequel to Negative Space.

Summary
The thought of what Joe must think of him now frightens him even more than the terror of being abducted and restrained. It hurts more than the things they stick into him or the cuts they make in him. He alternately commands and begs his captors - to let him go, to explain themselves, to send a message to Joe. All they do in response is inject him with something that makes him too groggy and sick to talk. If this were an interrogation, he’d tell them anything, answer any question, just to be able to tell Joe, “I didn’t leave you, I didn’t go by choice.”
But they don’t ask him anything. They don’t speak to him at all.
