“What’s goin’ on, love?” Kobra shakes his head. “Kobes, you gotta talk t’ me, sweetheart.” When there’s no response but another weak shake of Kobra’s head, Ghoul inches forward on his knees just a fraction and slides his hands from their position on Kobra’s shoulders and up to his face, cradling his jaw oh-so gently and tipping his head up to get a better look.
Once Kobra’s head is lifted enough for Ghoul to see his face in the dim light, the laboured breathing and the sobs all make sense. He looks like shit.
Or;
Kobra has a panic attack in the middle of the night and can't speak afterwards. Lucky for him, his boyfriend speaks ASL.

“What’s goin’ on, kiddo?” The Girl shrugs and sniffles again, and Jet’s heart just fucking shatters as he finally realises. He pulls her in close to him, one arm wrapped securely around her back and his other hand on the back of her head, holding her nice and close to his chest. She lets out this choked little sob as he murmurs, “Oh, lovebug, it’s alright. Mama’s gotcha, you’re safe here with me, m’kay?"
She nods slightly and presses her little damp cheek into his t-shirt that smells like car grease and Kobra and cigarettes - not the most comforting smell for the kid, he’ll admit. He pulls away for just a few seconds just to shift backwards on the bed, leaning up against the wall and sitting The Girl in his lap so he can rock her gently. Without making eye contact or even looking up anywhere near Jet’s face, she whispers, “Had a bad dream, Mama.”
Or;
The Girl has a nightmare, and it's up to her dads to make her feel better.
