Ava’s brow furrows, worry tightening her face as she shifts. “Bea,” she says; now it’s her turn to search for Beatrice’s gaze. “What is it?”
Beatrice’s hands are trembling, and she presses them together to hide it—she resists the urge to break eye contact, instead steadily meeting Ava’s eyes. She opens her mouth, and—says it: “I was scared.”
“Didn’t know that was possible.”
The tease falls flat. Beatrice shakes her head. “Everything that’s happening is frightening,” she says. “I’m only human.”
“No,” Ava says. “You’re so much more than that.”
