Umm Sharaf reaches down to pick the slip up. “What’s this?”
Her son groans. “Just a stupid school thing. I was hiding it from Miss Vera.”
“Now why would you do something like that?” Umm Sharaf chides. She knows that Peony hates his lessons, but the newest tutor is a nice enough woman. “I thought you liked the town school.”
“I do!” Peony protests. He shifts his weight from one foot to another. “It’s not anything important. It’s so the teacher can meet all our parents.”
“Oh?” Umm Sharaf raises an eyebrow.
“You don’t have to go,” Peony quickly says. “There’s a total afterthought ‘and guardians’ tacked onto the end, and I know Miss Vera would be sniffing around for any excuse to pull me out.”
“And why shouldn’t I go?” Umm Sharaf asks. “I’m your only mother, after all.”
