"Oh?" Gerri quirked an eyebrow at Roman with an air of suspicion. "What's your point?"
"Well, what if you didn't have to go on this trip and watch Baird flaunt his new relationship in your face by yourself. What if you were accompanied by a new, younger partner of your own. Someone to keep you company and piss Baird off with jealousy when he sees you're doing just fine without him." Gerri's eyes narrowed in understanding but she wasn't making a move to interrupt, so Roman plowed ahead. "Gerri, I can be your boyfriend for this trip. A fucking doting, adoring boy toy of your dreams. Baird won't know what to do with himself with me all over you."

"Roman, did you hear a word I just said?"
"Sorry, Shiv, I was distracted by the sight of Gerri's rack. She's serving those puppies up on a platter tonight and they're looking delicious, think she'd let me come on them if I begged long enough?" He pitched his voice to a louder volume as he spoke, trying to get Gerri's attention as she passed by, desperate for her to so much as glance at him.
It worked. Gerri stopped in her tracks, head swiveling to Roman, eyes narrowed and guarded, focusing on him for the briefest of seconds and then cutting to Shiv, who was spluttering, acting obnoxiously taken aback and aggrieved.
"It's okay, Siobhan. I've heard much worse over the years than your brother's crass humor, and besides, we both know he's all bark and no bite. These puppies could run circles around him without breaking a sweat." She flashed another beguiling look at Roman, so fast he almost didn't catch it, and then was off again, feet drifting her farther into the crowded party.
Roman and Gerri, attending a New Year's Eve party where no one knows they're a couple, find a creative way to connect before the clock strikes midnight.
