Summary
Gandalf wasn't lying when he said Bilbo could offer much more to the Company then they could guess. Specifically, he was referring to the fact that all hobbits have an animal form. Neither Gandalf nor Bilbo mention this to the dwarves, and nor does Bilbo tell Gandalf that he doesn't have a handle on his shifting (but Gandalf knows anyway).
Cue the dwarven surprise when they all wake up one morning and a golden-brown wolf is laying where Bilbo was the previous night.
