The first and second in line of succession never travel together. Neither do the monarch and the first in line.
Wilhelm is reminded of this rule and contemplates it for a moment as the world around him closes in and slows down to almost a full stop, as time begins to move sluggishly like molasses and stretches wide and paperthin beyond imagination. He can feel how the Earth slowly loses its grip on him as the only thing that keeps him tethered to the here and now is the brutal and vice-like grip of the seatbelt across his chest that anchors him relentlessly in place.
