Summary
“So the midtown blackout wasn’t part of your plan?”
He lightly touches her back as they turn off 8th Avenue. “The word ‘plan’ implies that I woke up this morning with the intent to seduce, not to, how did you put it?”
“Materialize.”
“Right! Materialize in your life during yet another city-wide crisis. I started today with fairly low hopes of seeing a friendly face at all, but when I saw you in the bar I thought, you know, if we haven’t completely fucked up this whole-” Lenny gestures between them “-thing, then I’d be an idiot not to try, at least. I gotta find out how the show corset holds up to extreme weather.”

Summary
The day is, as most days here are, perfect. Not a single cloud floats across the sky. A light breeze rustles the palm trees and stirs up the pool, and the sunlight reflects off the water to throw tiny ripples of light on the house. It’s always the fucking same, he thinks. Lenny’s suddenly right back where he was yesterday: trapped between the law and his near-constant craving for smack, unable to deal with how fucking nice it is when he’s walking around like a marked man, wondering if the next blow will be the last.
“You okay?” Midge calls from the door. She hasn’t bothered to change out of her nightgown, and the sight of her like this - awash in golden sun, here, in his house, fresh from his bed - breaks his thought spiral and his heart at roughly the same moment.
He shakes his head to clear it. “Deja vu, you know how it is."
June, 1966.
