It glistens at the nape of her neck, and when Agatha looks in the mirror, sometimes that’s all she can see. Just that brooch, the same as it was at her mother’s neck, only not holding a thick cloak to keep her hidden, not anymore. She breathes in, and the brooch lifts; breathes out, and it falters. Breathes in again, and it lifts again; feels the weight of it pushing down on her chest and forcing the breath back out.

Wanda considers – exactly once – how many people she’s killed.
Not just at Kamar-Taj, not just the probable friends of that other version of herself in that other universe, but the one’s she’s killed by accident – all those people in the building in Lagos, the accidental bystanders who must have been at their windows staring down at everything, must have seen the bomb be lifted up into the air by her magic, and then spent their last few seconds panicking as it drew ever closer to them.
(Steve told her that if she hadn’t moved the bomb, there would have been bystanders killed in the street. It didn’t make her feel better. Still doesn’t now.)

The first morning Agatha woke in this…wherever they are, she’d gasped, felt air filling her lungs for the first time in years, and blinked, exhilarated with the control she had over her own eyelids. She sat up, pushed a hand through her frizzy dark hair, and drew her knees up enough that she could rest her arms on them, lean forward with a surprised huff of air. If not for the state of the room she was in, she could almost convince herself that the past two years had been nothing but a bad dream, but given that….
Well, perhaps this was the dream. Not a bad one, necessarily, but enough unreality to think her mind had finally snapped. After two years of struggling to maintain herself, she wouldn’t be surprised. She’s known better people who wouldn’t have been able to survive.
Agatha has always been so good at surviving.

Summary
Wanda lays it out for her. The girl doesn’t know what she’s asking, doesn’t know what she’s expecting, and doesn’t tell her everything, even though she pretends that she has. It would be foolish to believe that the witch who hates her – who chose her, but still hates her – doesn’t have contingencies planned for giving her even a small amount of access to magic again.
That’s the thing – Wanda calls it giving her magic back, but that’s not how it works, not really. Wanda didn’t take her magic away in the same way that Agatha could absorb hers. She cut her off. For all that Agatha might appear healthy right now, she still feels hollow. Devoid of the thing that actually gives her life.
Wanda does not depend on magic the same way that Agatha does. It is not her life; it is something she uses without thought, without name, without understanding, and she would give it up in a heartbeat if the world let her. Wanda wants to be normal.
What a waste.

Summary
It isn’t always winter when Agatha returns to the little cabin in the mountains – not that it’s a little cabin anymore, after all of the expanding and changing and shifting that Wanda’s done to it – but often enough it is. There’s something about winter in Sokovia that keeps drawing her back, despite her wanderlust, like being pulled toward her own grave. She spends too much time out on the front porch in those moments, letting the cool air wash over her, freezing her wet hair against the nape of her neck, a mug of iced coffee in one hand.
When Agatha returns this time, winter melts into a warm spring, the apple trees just starting to blossom, a few of their petals filtering through on the soft spring breeze. One lands in her open palm, and she lifts it just so she can scent it. Soft. Light. Not anything like her earliest homes, but a lot like her most recent one. She still hesitates to refer to this cabin, now that it’s Wanda’s, as home. It’s certainly a nice place to stay, but she isn’t certain that she’s home.

Christopher drops his gaze, refuses to meet her eyes. He moves to their couch, sits on the edge of one cushion, and leans forward, arms on his knees, hunched with the weight of the singular word he says before he can even say it: “Claire.”
