Vi can’t sleep. Can’t let her mind wander off to that hazy realm of vulnerability; her muscles loosened; her demons let loose from their crates. Can’t lie in bed with the cold curl of absence against her chest, where a soft head of hair used to be cradled.
Can’t let down her guard. Not when the flame of adrenaline and the push-pull of survival is the only thing keeping her upright. Not when tears coil behind her eyelids with unsettling warmth, waiting to distort her voice into sobs.
She would give anything to feel the firm pressure of Vander’s arms around her own. To rest her chin across his chest, hear the soft gravel of his voice wrapping her in comfort, the smell of pipe smoke and leather, varnish and whiskey.

“And your parents?” Caitlyn asks, voice soft. And Vi flinches, but it’s a quiet plea- a gentle prodding, nothing more. So Vi ground herself in those crystalline eyes and says,
“Yeah. Killed by enforcers in the uprising. We… Powder and I… she was only five. Vander took us in.”
And then she has to bite back the crack in her voice, and look hurriedly away, because she’s afraid the raw anguish will spook Caitlyn, will eat away at what they have together.
But Caitlyn simply gazes at her, eyes heavy with sorrow, and Vi was wrong, wrong to ever doubt her, wrong to ever judge her for the badge she wore or the rifle she wielded, because Caitlyn is everything soft and potent and sincere.
And that touch, the soothing pressure against her hand, the warmth of their intertwined fingers; it’s like nothing Vi’s ever had. It’s addicting, dizzying, sends her mind spinning off with a deep sense of belonging.
