He’s been hanging here for almost twenty hours now, just watching them hurt her. If it weren’t for the gag in his mouth, he’d be biting and taunting, anything to get them to focus on anything but Cass, but he can’t work the damn rag out. She hangs just across the room from him, every once in a while being dragged out of sight where he can only rely on the splashing and gurgling to tell him that they’re trying to break her by drowning her in the rotting bathtub off the living room, but she always comes back to that hook. And he can’t see her eyes, but he can feel her gaze on him the whole time.
It’s killing him.

“Cassie, you gotta get up, we’re sneaking out,” he singsongs, waggling his eyebrows until she groans and tries to roll over. An exasperated sigh leaves him, “See, we thought you’d say that.”
With as much care as possible, Cass is unburied from her blankets and pulled onto her brother’s hip (“Be careful with her cast, Jay–” “Shut up, Timbit, her leg’s fine.”), her arms snaking around his neck and head drooping on his shoulder. “C’mon, little bat. The four of us are going to 7/11 while Dick and Damian are setting up in the backyard. We gotta get supplies.”
