Jessamine had never had dogs—but her father'd had two, large strong beasts, cropped ears and tail and their jowls hanging from their gums. Corvo had thought of them in a flash: the way they lay watchful by the emperor's throne when he was holding court; the place reserved for them at the foot of his bed; his thick hands lying on them, stroking the ridge of fur along their backs, their shoulders pressing into it. Yes. A dog, then. Her dog. At least here, where no one would know.

Summary
Daud has seen him feral, clawing his way out of unconsciousness as two Whalers hauled him from the drifting boat; he has seen him calculating, sharp despite the blunting of poison and sleeplessness, when his sword was at Daud's throat and he opted for leverage rather than applying pressure. He has seen him immovable before Parliament, bitingly furious in private—politically clever, too.
He hadn't seen this. It's different, hearing of the consequences and watching firsthand the process, the spareness of his movements, the force behind every one.

The only thing that kept Corvo from leaping right out of his chair at the sudden tap against his stomach was the glint of Daud's eyes fixed on him despite his face being turned to the rest of the guests. Corvo squinted back at him. Had he thrown something under the table? Surreptitiously searching his own lap would attract far too much attention while Alden was talking to him.
Then something closed around his knee and yanked, just lightly enough not to pull him forward on his chair. Oh, the bastard. Daud, as if he could read the realization on Corvo's face, gave him a long, slow blink and smirked predaciously.

Summary
When Daud surfaces from sleep to a deep, vibrant quiet, he keeps his eyes closed for a moment longer. They're rare, these moments in the Void. He's taken to finding comfort in them. They're a sign that his god, despite the long silences, hasn't simply forgotten him.
Then that voice comes like a confirmation.
"Daud," it says. He opens his eyes. The Outsider is crouched on the footboard, elbows perched on his knees, the hard black gleam of his gaze fixed on him. "You've been experimenting."Series

Karnacans said of a good party that it was fit for Fugue. On that day, people would throng into the streets after sleeping away the heat, with maché masks and hair decked out in colored twists of paper, and there would be dancing on tables and music and the heavy smell of spirits vibrant through the city until the morning light.
For Corvo's first Fugue in Dunwall, it rained, and rained, and rained.
