“No, Conseil,” Ned’s voice grew hoarse and rough with emotion, “Even if I escaped alone, the Professor is right. The Captain would never give you another chance. You and the Professor would live out the rest of your days here, and I–”
“The two of us, perhaps, never again would meet,” I said, catching his meaning.
I could not deny that I had grown deeply fond of him, and had even gone so far as to share his bed on three previous occasions. However, though I may have been inexperienced in matters of the flesh, I was well aware of the fact that sailors often knocked together merely for the sake of convenience, in order to assuage the inevitable loneliness of a long voyage at sea. I had not been so naive as to assume that Ned held more regard for me than he felt for any barmaid he may have run across in port.
