I woke up. I knew I was awake, as the lights were still on softly as Cliopher had promised they always would be.
I could feel the tears gather in my eyes, and as much as I tried to hold them back this time I failed and they escaped, trailing down my cheeks and falling. I curled onto my side, away from Kip, and cried as silently as I was able. I had a lot of experience crying silently; I had gotten good at it. Unfortunately, none of that experience involved hiding it from someone who was in the bed with me.

Artorin Damara isn't emperor anymore, but he isn't free of it, either. At least now he has someone to comfort him from his nightmares. This is not necessarily an improvement.
