Otto isn't particularly surprised when he's flung into the past (time travel's more of an inconvenience than a disaster to him by now), but this time, he's without his partner. There's nobody to guide him, nobody to help him out, and nobody to tell him how to get back.

“Do you think we're partners in every universe?” Otto asks quietly, tilting his head to face Todd. There's a small flutter of movement to his right, as Todd props his chin up on his hands, frowning.
“I think,” he responds slowly, “This is the only time it could've worked out.”
The boy doesn't say much more after that.
Otto turns back to his work.
