Summary
“What?” Buck asks again, his own brow furrowing now.
“Your gear,” Eddie says, nodding at him. “That’s my turnout coat.”
“No it’s not,” Buck says with confidence, yet still tries to look over his shoulder at the name on the back. He ends up spinning in a circle, like a dog trying to catch his own tail.
“Unless you changed your name to Evan Diaz recently,” Chimney teases. “I’m afraid it’s Eddie’s.”
Eddie’s heart feels like it’s going to beat right out of his chest, breaking through his ribcage at the words Evan Diaz.

Summary
“Come on,” Buck says, nodding his head towards the parking lot.
“Buck—”
“Don’t,” Buck cuts him off. “You may be able to brush off everyone else, but you’re not fooling me. So don’t even bother lying.”
Eddie looks at him with pleading eyes, and there’s so much pain right there, beneath the surface. He clenches his jaw and tries to bury it down further, staring at Buck’s chin rather than his eyes.
“Come on,” Buck says, his voice steady. He wets his lips, taps his keys against his leg. “Let me take you home.”

Summary
Eddie straightens up and takes his place next to Buck, his hands tucked in his pockets. “You’re not looking too bad out there, coach.”
“I know, right?” Buck says, a little surprised himself. “They’ve learned so much. I’m so proud of them.”
Eddie hums. “Wasn’t talking about the team,” he says, biting back a smile.
Buck blushes. They’ve been married for seven—almost eight years now, and he still blushes when his husband flirts with him.

Summary
So, it’s not a total shock when Bobby called them into his office and suggested something to help.
“But we’re already in therapy,” Buck tells him, his brows pinching together.
“Separately,” Bobby says, but he pauses like it’s a question. After a shared look of confusion, Buck and Eddie nod their heads. “Maybe you should try it together.”
“In couples therapy,” Eddie clarifies, repeating Bobby’s earlier words.
“Yes.”
“But—” Eddie’s eyes dart nervously over to Buck. “We’re not a couple.”

Summary
And then he sees it.
The thing that makes his heart hammer hard against his chest, makes the blood rush past his ears so loud he can hear it. The thing that makes his leg start bouncing faster, then stop altogether.
Eddie watches as Tommy leads Buck out onto the dance floor, their hands clasped together and the slightest blush on Buck’s cheeks.
The song is almost halfway over, but Tommy and Buck start up like it’s just beginning. Buck looks around nervously—force of habit—before Tommy steps somehow even closer and calms him down with his hands low on Buck’s hips.
Eddie coughs into his fist to try and stop whatever feeling is rising high in his chest, red hot and pulsing. He takes a sip of water.

Summary
It’s never really occurred to him to think otherwise.
He dates girls for the first thirty years of his life, sleeps with even more of them, and never once has Buck even really thought to ask. They’re always so small, at least in comparison to him, that his brain doesn’t even see it as an option.
Not until he’s older, wiser, and maybe a little bit more damaged. He gets a job as a firefighter and he loves it—really, he does—but it introduces him to some of the more scarring parts of his life. A ladder truck crushes his leg, his best friend gets shot with a sniper rifle in broad daylight, and he gets struck by lightning, just to name a few.
So he starts to think about it.
With age comes giving less of a fuck, or so he’s started to kind of figure out, and the older he gets the closer he is to admitting it, at least to himself.
