“Papa!”
Both children sprang up from their seats and ran towards their father, their faces also beaming with relief as he kneeled on the floor and opened his arms.
Their bodies vanished into the big coat he was wearing as they encircled him with their little arms.
"We're sorry, Papa. We got lost," Gale apologized, his voice muffled against the wet fabric.
"But we found this bakery," Eira added, looking up at her father with bright eyes. "And Phi Rain helped us. He gave us dry clothes, cookies and hot cocoa. And he braided my hair just like Mama used to," she pointed to the neat braid trailing down her back.
"And he let me sit on the counter!" Gale giggled, small hands on the face of the alpha. "And he even has a calico cat, just like ours!"
Their father listened, his attention shifting from his two children to Rain.
For a moment, everything else faded into the background. The thunder outside, the ticking of the oven in the kitchen, the subtle scent of fresh pastries—they all seemed to vanish.
For the first time in a long time, two souls looked up and locked eyes. They were two ships passing in the storm, acknowledging each other's presence from across the warmth of the bakery.
