Summary
The first time Leo had a nightmare was the night after his mom died. Many years down the line, Leo would look back and decide that this made almost too much sense, but eight-year-old Leo didn’t think that it made much sense at all. So, Leo was stuck reliving the worst thirty-six hours of his life over and over.
He was running from the cops to the sound of laughter for the third or thirtieth or maybe three hundredth time when the dream suddenly changed. Instead of running headlong into a pair of sturdy, uniformed legs, he ran into a pair that seemed almost frail in a long, black dress. He held tight to the fabric beneath his fingers and looked up at the person he'd run into and gasped. “Tía?”
Tía Callida frowned down at him, but she just carded her gnarled fingers through his hair. “Leo, what are you doing? You could have knocked me over being so careless.”

“I’m L–” the boy stumbled over the word before recovering. “Emil. You can call me Emil.”
Jason’s ears pricked, and he heard the half-truth, just like Lupa had taught him. That was fine. He could fib, too. “Okay. I’m Michael. Did you see anything weird about that guy?”
Emil paused for a moment, assessing before he shrugged. “Does there have to be something weird? He was a big guy picking on a smaller kid, and that’s not fair. You’re, what? Twelve?”
“Ten.”
Emil brightened considerably. “Me too!”
Jason cocked his head to the side. “Really? I thought you were eight.”
Emil scowled at him. “Next time I’m letting bad guys eat you.”

Leo narrowed his eyes and pulled the meanest expression he could muster. “What do you want?”
The guy didn’t seem phased in the slightest. In fact, his grin got wider, and he offered Leo a giant soft pretzel. “You want one? I charmed the pants off that old lady at the pretzel stand, and she gave me two.”
Leo cast a glance over at the pretzel stand where a kindly old lady with her silver hair pulled up in a neat bun was selling pretzels. He scowled back at the guy. “Why’re you trynna to give it to me, then? You do something gross to it or something?”
The guy reared back in mock outrage. “What? Do you want me to try and eat both of these things? Think of the sodium. I'd die of high blood pressure before I hit my 20s. Do you really want that on your conscience?”
Leo looked him up and down. “I wouldn’t mind.”
